When I look back at how I drank in college my liver hurts. I’m no longer the spry 21-year old who could do a bunch of shots and wake up the next morning feeling completely fine. Now I have maybe two or three glasses of wine and I hurt the next day with a pounding headache.
So what are the best ways to cure a hangover? Food! Well food and maybe a couple of Advil, but food is a great way to make that hangover go away. And today I’m in need of a hangover cure.
I would go out to brunch to remedy my aching brain, but it’s just as easy to make something at home and save some moolah. The best types of food to cure a hangover are the greasy kinds. It might be a myth that greasy foods make your hangovers go away, but I will firmly believe that myth because it works for me and so many people.
For those of you in need of a hangover cure I present to you—the hangover cure grilled cheese sandwich! This carb loading sandwich will make your hangover go away and make you ready to take on the day. It’s also easy to make. The best part about this sandwich is the avocado tucked away under the blanket of melted cheese. Being a millennial I add avocado to almost anything and I have yet to be disappointed. The avocado is also a nice dose of healthy fat.
The egg provides some much needed protein to help your body get back on its feet (pun totally intended). You can add the egg in a variety of ways. I chose to poach mine but you can also hard-boil the egg and bury it in the cheese with the avocado. You can also fry yours sunny side-up if you love runny yolks as much as I do.
Okay so I may have burnt one a litt le...oops.
I used two types of cheeses in this grilled cheese concoction: mozzarella and Jarlsberg. You can switch these out for your preferred cheese. Did you know that the secret to making the perfect ooey-gooiest grilled cheese is finding a cheese with the perfect pH balance? There’s actually a whole plethora of science behind grilled cheese and the YouTube channel Reactions breaks it all down for you. It’s pretty fascinating stuff actually—food science is so cool!
Hangover Cure Grilled Cheese
Servings: 2 sandwiches
Ingredients
4 slices sourdough bread
¼ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
¼ cup shredded Jarlsberg cheese
1 avocado, sliced
2 eggs
Butter
Instructions
To poach the eggs, bring 2 cups of water to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer. Carefully crack each egg in a small bowl to avoid cracking the yolk in the water. Add the eggs one at a time to water and use a slotted spoon to gather the egg whites together. Cook for 3-5 minutes, until the whites begin to thicken. Remove the eggs from the water and set aside.
Butter each of the bread slices on one side only. On one slice of bread, add a hefty handful of the cheeses on the non-buttered side. Then add the avocado slices. Top with another handful of cheese and a second slice of bread, buttered side up. Repeat for second sandwich.
In a skillet, melt some butter over medium heat. Lay the sandwiches on the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, until golden brown on one side. Flip and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until bread is golden brown.
Plate and top with your egg and drizzle some sriracha or some salsa or whatever topping you prefer.
Make sure you drink plenty of water and maybe pop an Advil—or three. Now if you excuse me, I’m going to go get rid of my hangover.
